National Screening Program for Lung Cancer - Time to Act

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths in Sweden and around the world. Early detection is absolutely crucial to enable curative treatment, but two-thirds of lung cancer cases are diagnosed too late. Many EU countries are now planning for lung cancer screening, and some have already implemented it.

There are many positive signs, but few governments have yet decided on national programs. In Sweden, there is significant knowledge about the value of early detection of lung cancer, and several studies have been published in this area. Lung cancer screening was chosen as an example of the opportunities that come with expanded screening since the EU decided on a new recommendation in the field. Lung, prostate, and stomach cancer are the three new cancer types for which screening is recommended, and the issue is highly relevant in Sweden, including a pilot project in Stockholm. In addition to the initiative in Stockholm-Gotland, there are plans in Sweden to start lung cancer screening in several regions within a year. However, the Swedish Cancer Society warns of another slow implementation when a recommendation from the National Board of Health and Welfare finally comes. We cannot wait - it's time to act NOW!

The seminar is organized by the innovation hub: Vision Zero Cancer.
